What is Virtual Hosting

Virtual Hosting, most commonly known as Virtual Private Servers, has become a very essential hosting platform when the users have become more conscious for better server up-time and multitasking. The concept of Virtual Hosting/Servers is also termed as Semi-Dedicated Hosting / Semi-Dedicated Servers.

In Shared Hosting the Operating System is shared among various Websites/Applications in a way that every user can access from that OS to their respective software/applications. In the Virtual Server a physical server is partitioned using any Virtualization Software giving a feel of a separate, individual server isolated from each other as in the Dedicated Servers. Virtual servers offers a high level of security as the user gets individual access to the server with freedom to install his own software and applications not bothering about the other users.

The most easiest way to understand Virtual Server is that in the Virtual Hosting the resources of physical server is allocated to various users/OS keeping them unaware of each other. Virtual Server is just an image of Dedicated Server giving user the feel of VIP platform within his budget. Each Virtual Server is capable of hosting its own Operating System and can be operated separately. This is important as it allows to run Applications and Softwares with high server resources on the convenience of the user. Also the users get complete control over the server so as not to bother the technical staff every time they need help.

A virtual server is created on a physical server, commonly known as 'Dedicated Server', using a Hypervisor that allocates resources to the so partitioned server. The hypervisor is responsible to manage and allocate resources of the Virtual Server. Though there are Types of Virtualizations and so are the Hypervisors and their respective features.

Since in a Virtual Private Server OS is separated from other VM's, users can run their own softwares and applications as per their convenience. But again since all the VM's are created on a single physical server or a Dedicate Server VPS's have limited CPU usage and RAM. When the user needs more than the allocated CPU, RAM and HDD its time to move to the next VPS configuration or to a Dedicated Server.
